I don't see in your docs if a user's unsubscribe request is in context of the category. For example if I set the header X-SMTPAPI: {"category" : "news"}, and the user unsubscribes from that email, will I later be able to send this user a password reset email, assuming its a different category?
What happens if an email does not have a category set?

Jon,
Currently unsubscribes are not scoped to a particular category, so it affects all emails sent from an account. This feature is being considered, and in the mean time you can use the SMTP API bypass_list_management filter (http://wiki.sendgrid.com/doku.php?id=...) for emails such as password reset emails that must be sent regardless of unsubscribe settings.

+1. I generally don't need to include the Unsubscribe links in the emails, because they're emails users have requested, but some newsletter and digest emails would deserve different treatment.

+1 definitely need to include unsubscribe on the bottom of each email!

+1 - This is an important feature. I don't want a user to be unable to receive a password reset email just because he's opted out of our notification emails, and I don't want to have two different mailers using two different SMTP relays.

enabling this app will bypass unsubscribes, bounces & spam reports. It's great for things like password resets where you'd always want them to be sent. -

This is very similar to a feature request I submited last week regarding allowing filtering by category. The SendGrid community obviously uses categories heavily, and there should be more support for it in the API.
There have been 5 people in this thread, plus more in the thread I started last week: http://community.sendgrid.com/sendgri...
Everyone PLEASE comment if you want more API support for categories. It's important that we voice our opinion. -

+1 Must have for a lot of lists and message types. Otherwise we will have to just deal with it on our end, and that is way time consuming.

I'm not familiar with categories, but I use the Newsletters API which uses recipient lists. I want to unsubscribe users from individual lists (is this already how it works?). I'm writing my own code to replicate the list data on my server but ideally I could keep the unsubscribed names on my lists with an unsubscribed flag that ensured no future delivery (right now my solution involves deleting the unsubscribed names off individual recipient lists).
